ANTHONY LUVERA, Assisted Self-Portrait of Mauvette Reynolds from  Construct, 2018-2022

Construct was created between 2018 and 2022, in collaboration with people who have experienced homelessness in Birmingham.

Over four years, Anthony Luvera was embedded within the support services of SIFA Fireside, Birmingham’s main day centre for homeless and vulnerably housed adults. Here he worked in the kitchen, before inviting participants to explore photography through regular workshops. Over 50 people used disposable cameras to document their experiences. Luvera continued working with the group during the Covid-19 pandemic. Participants were also invited to make a self-portrait for his ongoing series, Assisted Self-Portraits. These images are taken by participants in locations that are significant to them, using a digital medium format camera and shutter release.

ANTHONY LUVERA is a socially engaged artist, writer, and educator based in London. The collaborative work he creates has been exhibited widely, including the UK House of Commons, Tate Liverpool, The Gallery at Foyles, the British Museum, London Underground’s Art on the Underground, National Portrait Gallery London, Four Corners, Belfast Exposed Photography, Australian Centre for Photography, PhotoIreland, Malmö Fotobiennal, Goa International Photography Festival, Les Rencontres D’Arles Photographie, Oslo Negative, and elsewhere. He has written for Trigger, Photography and Culture, Visual Studies, Photoworks, Source, and Photographies and others.

Anthony is Associate Professor of Photography in the Centre for Arts, Memory and Communities at Coventry University, and editor of Photography For Whom?.
