This image is from Angela Christofilou’s Church Bingo series, which documents her grandmother's community in Heywood, Lancashire, playing bingo in St James Church Hall. Photographed in 2019, the work both commemorates Heywood’s elderly community spirit and spotlights fading cultural traditions in a post-pandemic Britain. Church Bingo reminds us of the importance of smiling and enjoying the finer things in life while we’re here -  friends, a cuppa tea, and bingo. The series went on to win the British Journal of Photography’s Portrait of Britain 2022 award and was exhibited nationwide on screens and billboards in January 2023. 

ANGELA CHRISTOFILOU is from Lancashire, England, and Athens, Greece, and lives in London. She works as a photographer, actor, voice-over artist, and singer. Her photography focuses on protest, human rights, activism, and the documentation and sharing of both personal narratives and community stories.
